One way to think about anxiety or depression is that the mind is a lot like the sky. Sometimes it feels clear and calm, and sometimes it feels cloudy or stormy. Thoughts, feelings, and memories come and go in the same way. Some are easy to hold, and some are painful. In ACT, the goal is not to get rid of the storms. It is to learn how to make room for them without letting them run your life.
Difficult thoughts and feelings are part of being human. The struggle often grows when we spend all our energy trying to fight them, push them away, or wait for them to disappear before we begin living. ACT helps us practice noticing what is here, with more openness and less struggle, so we can turn back toward what matters most.
Even when pain is present, it is still possible to take small steps toward the kind of life you want to live. That is the heart of ACT: making space for your inner experience while choosing to move in the direction of your values.
